Sterkenburg has a long history of working with Carl Jung in the field of analytical psychology. He has been described by Jung as his “most faithful disciple”. Spitzy was the first to note that Jung's patients’ dreams were more interesting than his own. He was also the first to notice that they were more often about the unconscious than the conscious mind. He wrote, "I think he [Jung] was right when he said that one should think more about the dreams than about the conscious mind. This is because he felt that the conscious mind is only one small part of the human psyche."
In addition to his work with Jung, Sterkenburg was a pioneer in the field of "Contemporary Analytical Psychology", an offshoot of analytical psychology that focuses on depth psychology. He was a co-founder of the Jungian Society of Australia and New Zealand, together with Colin Fraser, Bertha Dutton and Christopher Farrant.
Sterkenburg died in Melbourne, Australia, on 23 May 1994, aged 80.
