    Nina Derwael started out her career as a gymnast in Belgium. This is where she first became involved in dance, something that would later become one of the many aspects of her career.

    She eventually moved to the United States to train under the guidance of famed choreographers like Mary Bonney, Bart Conner and Missy Franklin. She was selected to compete at the 2008 Air Force Elite Challenge and won the all-around competition.

    This led to a five-year contract with the US Air Force which led to her becoming an American citizen. She also competed in the 2009 World Championships where she finished in sixth place.

    Nina Derwael married fellow dancer Scott Derwael in 2010 and they were married for two years before splitting up in 2012. She then went on to date Brazilian pole vaulter Thiago Braz da Silva in 2014. The couple broke up in July of that year.

    Nina Derwael (Dutch pronunciation: [dɛrʋaːl] or [dərʋaːl]; born 26 March 2000) is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She is the 2020 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion (2018, 2019), and a two-time European champion (2017, 2018) on the uneven bars, the 2019 European Games champion on the balance beam as well as a two-time Belgian national all-around champion (2015, 2018). She is the first Belgian gymnast to medal at the World Championships, the first to become a World champion, and the first to become a European champion. She represented Belgium at the 2016 Summer Olympics and at the 2020 Olympics. At the 2020 Olympics, she led Belgium to a first-ever team final where Belgium finished 8th. She also qualified for the all-round final where she ended 6th overall and for the uneven bars apparatus finals competition where she won the gold medal, the first of any colour for a Belgian woman in the sport at the Olympic Games.
