Mr. Tumnus very much enjoys his role as a nanny and is very skilled at it; however, he often gets distracted by his own dreams and the various things he sees in them, such as wolves and sheep. He can often be seen daydreaming and wandering about the forest, feeding his sheep and practicing his flute. He keeps a secret diary in which he writes down his dreams and dreams of the future.
Early in the book, Mr. Tumnus first sees Mr. tin's son Narnia through a tin horn that has been blown into the forest by Aslan Himself. He notices how special Narnia is, and immediately decides to take care of him.
