I remember reading the manga and thinking "What kind of character is that? He's just a normal guy who's grown up being trained to fight, but he's actually really nice, and he's not an asshole."

I agree with you that he isn't an asshole. That is why he gets pissed at the girls who are so obviously attracted to him but seem to have zero intention of pursuing him.
