Her mother, who was born in southern Germany, was an artist. Her father was an American who had moved to Germany after World War II. When Margot was 11, her mother died of cancer, and Margot dedicated her last year of high school to raising money for her siblings.
Margot got her start in acting when she was 19, working with the German Theater in Frankfurt for three years.
