He was known for his practical jokes, like rigging hammocks over the decks of ships so that when the sailor went to sleep, he would wake up in the water. He also rigged the ship’s cannons to fire up in the air and then go off on the deck. Severard’s sense of humor also helped him get along with his superiors and superiors’ subordinates.
Severard was born on February 20, 1788 near Portsmouth, England. He was the son of Joseph Severard, an engineer in the Royal Navy. His mother died when he was only two years old. Severard’s father married twice more before he died in 1807, leaving Severard an orphan at the age of 13. He was taken in by a wealthy family who raised him as their own. In 1809, a year after his father’s death, Severard joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman.
