It is believed that, as a child, Harding was shy, lonely, and anxious. At the age of ten, he became an avid reader of adventure stories. He was influenced by his father to become a sailor, but he saw the realities of the sea. He left school at fourteen, and worked briefly as a roustabout on a ship.
Harding enlisted in the Africa campaign in World War I. While serving as a private in the British Army, he was wounded twice. After the war, he took up photography as a hobby. He traveled extensively around the world, and became interested in photography as an art form. He began to write adventure stories, and published his first book in 1921. He earned enough money from his books to take photographs around the world. He was named an official war photographer by the Imperial War Museum in London in 1924.
Harding's first wife died in 1927. He remarried in 1928, and divorced again in 1934. In 1936, he married his second wife, Olive Durrance.
In 1930, while taking a photograph of a model, Harding found a cache of film showing a woman walking on her hands.
