William F. Ruddiman (January 8, 1943 in Washington, D.C.) is an American paleoclimatologist and professor emeritus at the University of Virginia. Outside scientific circles, he is known mainly for his theory, known as the Ruddiman Hypothesis, on the antiquity of man-made global warming, which he traces back to the beginnings of agriculture and which would have prevented or delayed the return of the ice age. During the 1980s, his work had also affirmed the link between the uprising of the highlands of Tibet and Colorado and the cooling of the climate 50 million years ago [1].
