The folkloric figure of St. George, or St. George and the Dragon, is part of the occult mythos which Lovecraft was exposed to as a child. St. George is associated with the occult symbol of the Dragon. The occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was involved in the occult tradition of St. George and had created a St. George symbol called the St. Georgemas Cross which incorporates the Illuminati's occult pentagram into its design. Lovecraft was a member of a Masonic Lodge and a devotee of Crowley's philosophy.

Crowley believed that he invented the idea of a "Great Old One" – a mythological being – which inspired Lovecraft's Cthulhoid beasties. In fact, Crowley even published a book called The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts, which contains a chapter called "The Book of St. George".
