These scales are actually derived from Jung’s theory of psychological functions. The MBTI tests each of these four functions, giving scores between +100 and -100. In addition, the test also measures the relative strengths of each function, so that a person can be said to have a dominant function (i.e., extraverted or intuitive), or an auxiliary function (i.e., sensing or thinking). There are 65 possible combinations of scores for each of the four scales. A total score of 488 is considered average, and scores above 500 are very high.
