Munari was born in Milan, Italy in 1903, and is best known for making the first color illustrations for the “Tintin” comic book. He was a very early adopter of digital printing, and his work has been featured in books and magazines since the 1990s. He is also known for his art restoration, most notably of the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.
As a young man, Munari was an adventure-seeking anarchist, and it is said that he was a founding member of the Italian Resistance during World War II. In 1947, he moved to Paris, where he lived until his death in 2007.
In the late 1970s, Munari was an early adopter of personal computers, which he used to create color illustrations for a number of different publications. He was a regular contributor to “The New York Review of Books” from 1977 until 2005.
