Deafheaven - Sunbather personality type is INFP, and I wanted to convey that through her character. I thought it was interesting that Sunbather is about this person who has this extreme anxiety and she's like a spider in a web, she's completely trapped and she's so afraid. She's afraid of people and she's afraid of what might happen. And the music is so heavy on the first album, but on this record the music is much more subtle. It's like you get to the point where she feels so trapped. She's almost ready to give up and just give in to her fears and what might happen, and then the music changes and she starts to find some sort of way out.
SF: It's interesting how you've gone from something very dark like "Aegis" to a somewhat lighter tone on the new record.
EL: I think with that first record I was really just kind of digging into my own feelings and emotions. When I finished it I had a lot of really intense feelings that I didn't really know quite what to do with. It's always difficult for me to express my feelings, but I really had to find a way to get those feelings out, so I turned to music.
Sunbather is the second studio album by the American metal band Deafheaven. After the release of their debut record Roads to Judah, the then two piece group consisting of George Clarke and Kerry McCoy began work on Sunbather under the label Deathwish and recorded in several days in January 2013. The recording process brought a third member into the fold with drummer Dan Tracy who would go on to become a permanent fixture of the band. The album was recorded in The Atomic Garden Recording Studio, owned by Jack Shirley who had been a long time producer of the band. Although Deafheaven had been strongly influenced by black metal as well as other diverse metal acts, their music drew comparisons from music critics to shoegaze, post-rock, and alternative rock sounds. This trend was further continued on Sunbather.
