In The Two Towers, Merry lives in Minas Tirith under the rule of King Theoden, a wise and fair king who is the last of the Lords of the West. It is a time of peace and prosperity for the people of Gondor, but Merry is a restless spirit who tries to escape.
When Frodo and Sam return to Gondor, they find that Merry has been captured by the Orc chief Gothmog. The three hobbits set out to rescue him from Gothmog's lair. They enter a dead end and must face a terrifying troll before they can save Merry. In the end, all three hobbits are reunited with Merry at the foot of Mount Doom, where he will go on to live a long and happy life.
