“Quarters! is a concept album that takes a look at people’s lives and the way they relate to each other,” lead singer Stu Mackenzie tells Rolling Stone. “It is less a concept than it is a collection of stories that came together, like a puzzle piece or set of laws. The stories are connected by a common theme, but they don’t necessarily have to be related. There are parts where I’m singing about my father, me, my sister and my brother, but they’re not all related.”
Mackenzie says he wrote the songs for Quarters! over the course of three years. “I started writing the songs from the perspective of how it would be to be on the outside, looking in on these people who I care about,” he explains. “It was about having this feeling of helplessness because you want to help them but you don’t know how to help them.
