Oldfield, a British musician and composer, is the son of a military man, and was raised in a strict environment. Oldfield began to play the piano at age five and composed his first piece at age eight. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, he tried out for the Royal Navy. The Navy rejected him, but he was accepted into the Royal Air Force, where he became a fighter pilot.
Adventures in music began for Oldfield when he was stationed in Germany. He was sent to a Luftwaffe base where he played the piano in a pub called the "Fliegerturm" in Ahlhorn. He played piano and sang in the pub to earn money for beer. The place was frequented by local German military personnel and celebrities from the music industry.
Oldfield had a problem with alcohol during this time in his life. It is unclear whether this was an issue that was formed in childhood, or if it started after his time in Germany. By the time he was stationed in Germany, he had already had three brushes with the law in England.
