Rhodes is the only child of the late Walter Rhodes, founder of Rhodes Homes, and his wife, Colleen. From birth, he was nicknamed “Little Rho” by Walter Rhodes, because his name was Robert. According to his mother, Colleen, at the time of his birth he looked like a devil, but “not the scary kind.”
As a youngster, Robert Rhodes was always seen as the center of attention. His parents wanted him to be “liked by everybody,” so they took him to each activity they participated in or were associated with. His mother said that he had a bright personality that made everyone love him.
Robert Rhodes was extremely intelligent. He was able to read at age two and was able to write his name before he could talk. He attended various public schools throughout South Carolina, eventually graduating from The Citadel in 1972.
Rhodes was interested in both business and politics. He graduated from college with a degree in business administration in 1976. He set out to make a name for himself in business, but ended up getting involved in politics.
