Flerida is an ancient city in the province of Córdoba, Andalusia. It is located about 22 km from the provincial seat of Córdoba, in the eastern end of the province. It is an important stop on the way from Córdoba to Granada, and is noted for its bird-farming industry. The city also has a strong leather and textile industry.
The city has approximately 40,000 inhabitants, with the majority being of Arab and Mozarab origin.
The name Flerida comes from the Arabic "flārida" (which means “clean” or “pure”), and refers to the city's origins as a center of water-farming.
A few years after the Muslim conquest of Spain, in 781, a small settlement called "Flores" was founded on a small hill near the Guadalquivir river. This settlement was re-founded as Flerida (also spelled "Flores") by the Christian king Alfonso III of Asturias in 873, and was the first capital of Córdoba province.
