In my own case, I found that my New York experiences tended to confirm the perception of the psychopath as a "loser." I was a "loser" in the sense that I was a young immigrant who had the misfortune of being born in a period of great social and economic upheaval. I was a "loser" because I was thrust into the world of organized crime at the age of seventeen, when I was already alienated from my own ethnic background. I was a "loser" because I became absorbed into the underworld without any knowledge of how to survive there. I was a "loser" because I did not "fill in the blanks" with any kind of traditional values. I was a "loser" because I was young, naive, and inexperienced in this world. But at the same time I was a "loser" in the sense that I had no choice except to become involved in organized crime.
