When I was diagnosed with EDSD, I was not surprised. I had always known that I was different. I had rebelled by being a very active child, but I was still expected to follow the rules of the school system. However, when I was in my late teens, I began to notice that my symptoms were getting worse.
The early symptoms of EDSD are usually mild. They include fatigue, poor appetite, numbness in the extremities, joint pains, swollen hands, swollen feet, and back pain. The early symptoms are sometimes mistaken for fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.
As the disease progresses, other symptoms become evident. These include muscle stiffness and pain, abnormal growth of the bones, poor wound healing, decreased body temperature, poor circulation, shortness of breath, tingling sensations in the hands and feet, weakness of the legs and arms, increased sensitivity to pain, loss of height, weight loss or gain, and poor concentration ability.
