AOL offered email, instant messaging, bulletin boards, and a variety of other services. One of those other services was a web portal called "The Happy Place." The Happy Place was a place where AOL members could create their own virtual community—a place where they could post their own personal homepages.
As far as anyone can tell, there was no planned name for this new website—but as it happened, one of the first homepages people created was called The Happy Place.
