According to his official biography, Lorenzo de’ Medici was born in 1449, in the village of Urbino. As the son of a notary from a minor family of farmers and fishermen, he had little hope for a promising future.
However, the boy’s grandfather was a well-known astrologer who predicted that his grandson would become a great ruler. Since the boy was not old enough to make his own decisions, he was sent to Rome, where he was educated at the court of Lorenzo de’ Medici, Duke of Urbino. In 1469, Lorenzo de’ Medici married Clarice Orsini, a member of a wealthy and powerful family in Rome.
