    Botticelli was born in Prato, Italy in 1445. His father was a successful Florentine merchant. His mother died when he was 3 years old, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother. He was an intelligent child who loved music, but he did not show any talent for art.

    At 16, he joined the Florentine army, where he experienced great success at the Battle of Anghiari in 1464. After this battle, he received an inheritance from his father’s business that allowed him to study art at the workshop of Sisto Badalocchio.

    It was during this time that he met Michelangelo Buonarroti, who became his lifelong friend. Together, they studied under Polidoro da Caravaggio in Rome.
