In an interview with Famitsu, Koshiro was asked how he knew he wanted to make a sequel to The Last Story, and his answer is quite revealing. In his mind, “The Last Story was a completely different work from the ones that I’d made up until then.” This is why he made it a sequel to begin with. He wanted to do something more specifically tailored to his own tastes, and that’s why he made The Last Story.
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that The Last Story II isn’t going to have some of the same elements from the previous game. For one thing, Koshiro left the world of The Last Story with a sense of sadness and loneliness.
