In the early years of his childhood, Stafford was a voracious reader and dreamed of writing a book about the history of the American Revolution. He studied literature and writing at Amherst College, where he wrote a number of stories and songs, and his first published work was a poem. He also played in two rock bands: The Amherst College Wives and The Amherst College Husbands.
In 1966, Stafford enrolled in the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Journalism, where he worked as a reporter for the campus newspaper, "The Daily Cardinal". At the end of his first semester he moved to New York City to freelance as a writer and editor, while maintaining his college studies.
In 1968, while working as an editor at "Playboy", he published his first novel, "The Magic Garden of Francis Beekman". He never received a proper publishing contract for his work, but "Playboy" paid him for the short stories he had written for them.
Stafford returned to Madison in 1969 to finish his degree. He soon became associate editor for "The Wisconsin State Journal".
