The character, who had been made popular by the Disney films Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Cinderella, was a beloved symbol of female empowerment.
But as the female characters of Disney films became more empowered, so did their creators. In a 2018 interview with the New York Times, animation director Henry Selick (director of the first two films) recalled that at one point, he worried that the films might be “too ‘feminine’” for audiences.
“I actually had a mini panic attack,” said Selick. “We were pushing the boat out too far.”
Disney princesses have always been strong — and in turn, Disney princesses have always been more than just the sum of their parts. They’ve been aspirational, aspirational fantasy. They’re a reflection of what society wants women to be. They’re representations of a female ideal — and they are not expected to be realistic.
