One of my favorite examples of this was when a friend of mine started talking about how her dog was pretty much like a human baby. She could totally relate to how cute and annoying it was to have a baby, and how much it needs you.
For the first time in my life, I had a visceral response to this. I’ve never really thought of my dog as anything but an animal, and the idea of “liking him”, or “knowing him”, or “being with him” made no sense to me.
A few hours later I was at a bar, and someone told me that their dog died. So I had a moment where I felt profoundly sad for them, and then I thought about my dog and my response to that person’s story.

This unsweetened Cookie is always drawing graffiti with a cynical smile. This is how she expresses herself on--- well, just about anything! Since little, she grew up cleaning up after her grandmother's mess, making her mature for her cookie age.
