    “You know what? I’ve always been a little bit strange,” he says. “I’d always talked a lot and been kind of a character in high school. I was the kid that would crack jokes. But by the time I got to college, I kind of had to get serious about it. I felt I had to change my personality as I became more adult and more responsible and serious about work and about school.”

    He says his mother has been a big source of support for him. She encouraged him to go back to school. He took an English class at Wichita State and got involved with the teachers union.

    “And she said, ‘Why don’t you run for student body president?’ I said, ‘OK, I will try it.’ I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew that I wanted to be a leader of people and wanted to be in an environment where people looked to me for advice and encouragement. And my mother was a big help in that regard, too.
