He says his mother has been a big source of support for him. She encouraged him to go back to school. He took an English class at Wichita State and got involved with the teachers union.
“And she said, ‘Why don’t you run for student body president?’ I said, ‘OK, I will try it.’ I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew that I wanted to be a leader of people and wanted to be in an environment where people looked to me for advice and encouragement. And my mother was a big help in that regard, too.
