King Leopold ruled the vast Belgian Congo (modern-day Congo, Zaire). He was a ruthless dictator who ruthlessly exploited the natives of his colony for questionable financial gain.
King Leopold committed a wide range of atrocities against the Congolese people – from mass evictions to torture, rape and murder – all in the name of “civilizing” the natives.
