The Beast is the title character of the first book of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. He is a boy, who is later revealed to be a talking black horse. He is the first to discover the daemon (or devil) that may provide humanity with the ability to determine right from wrong. He is also the first to realize that Lyra Belacqua is actually an orphan girl named Lyra, who was kidnapped by the Magisterium. He lives in a cave north of Bolvangar. The Beast is defined by his desire to reach the center of the world and achieve his purpose there. It is revealed that he has no head or limbs. "The Beast" is also his name for Lyra, which he referred to her as because she was so innocent and pure. The Beast does express some concern for her because she was so desperate for knowledge about her origins.
