“I’m a Marine Corps veteran,” she said. “I was in the Marines for eight years and I was in the military police. I served in Okinawa, Japan and in Guam and then in San Diego and in Iraq. So that experience in the military and in the military police in Okinawa and Japan and Guam and San Diego and in Iraq — that was a military style of living in a combat zone in the military — I was exposed to a lot of trauma and I talked about what my experiences were in Iraq and when I got back to civilian life. That’s when I started writing the book.”
