For me, the best fictional characters tend to be the ones with a very strong sense of identity and a good understanding of their own gifts and weaknesses. This is why I love most of the characters from The Hunger Games, and why I love so many of the characters from The Lord of the Rings. They have a firm sense of themselves and they know what they can do and what they can’t do. They know how to navigate their relationships with others with a lot of skill, but they also know that they have a lot of weaknesses and that their gifts might not work with every person.
Cinder knows who she is – a mechanic – and how to use her gifts – metal – for her survival. But she also knows she’s not as strong as some of the other people in the world, and she’s not as good as those other people, either. She’s a strong character with a good understanding of her strengths and weaknesses, and strong enough to accept those weaknesses and work around them.
