Sanson was an engineer and worked with his father, who was a miller in Sèvres. He was born 1 March 1772 at Sèvres, but his family moved to Paris when he was 2 years old. He took up engineering studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.
In 1796, he was appointed to the Commission of Roads and Bridges, where he played an important role in the creation of the Parisian road network, including the creation of new bridges, particularly the Pont Neuf.
