    In the world of politics, he is known as a pioneer of the French welfare state, as well as a founding father of the French Republic as a whole. His political career began in 1788, when he was elected to the Estates General of France, where he served as a member of the Third Estate. He served as a deputy for Paris in the National Assembly from 1791 to 1792, and as a member of the Council of Ancients from 1792 to 1794. He emerged as one of the most prominent advocates of the sans-culottes movement by publishing several pamphlets. In 1793, he was named Commissioner for Commerce and Finances, and was appointed minister of the interior in 1794. In this capacity, he introduced several reforms, including the suppression of feudal rights. From 1815 to 1830, he served as a member of the Chamber of Peers.

    He is known for being a passionate supporter of social equality and a strong believer in human rights, and was involved in the abolition of slavery during his time as a minister.
