Eysenck's theory, which was published in the book "Theory of Personality" in 1966, proposed that there are four different "types" of personality, or one can say "traits", that are characterized by different values. According to Eysenck, the four types are based on the distribution of three traits. The three traits are extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism.
Extraversion is the extent to which people seek stimulation in their lives, being more socially active or talkative, while being less sensitive or artistic. Neuroticism is the extent to which people are worried or emotionally unstable, showing more feelings of anxiety or depression. Psychoticism is the extent to which people are "unstable", being more likely to have psychotic tendencies. These three traits are believed to be independent, but they tend to cluster together. Hence, the four personality types are based on this clustering.
