The Eameses’ interest in architecture was sparked by an early interest in building with blocks. They had both attended the American School in Switzerland, and the only way the Eameses could afford to continue their education was to leave school at 13 and work for a living. It wasn’t until 1940, when they were attempting to sell furniture, that they began to investigate the possibility of building their own house.
With no knowledge of construction or furniture making, they set out to build their own home. Their first attempts were disastrous; their house would not expand enough to hold the growing family, and whenever they tried to build with foamboard, the board would crack and the house would fall apart.
With no money left to rebuild, they sold their furniture business and set out to find a new one. They traveled across the country, finding work wherever they could find it. They worked on construction jobs, at odd jobs, even as waiters and busboys. During this time, they also designed and built furniture with scrap materials. In 1942, they made a trip back to Europe to visit family.
Pavetta is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. It comprises about 350 species of trees, evergreen shrubs and sub-shrubs. It is found in woodlands, grasslands and thickets in sub-tropical and tropical Africa and Asia. The plants are cultivated for their simple but variable leaves, usually opposite but also occur in triple whorls. The leaves are often membranous with dark bacterial nodules. Pavetta has small, white, tubular flowers, sometimes salviform or funnel-shaped with 4 spreading petal lobes. The flowers are carried on terminal corymbs or cymes.
