The central character of "A River's Journey" is Anna Maria Louisa Hay who was born in 1756 and died in 1832, but Delafield's novel is largely based on the life of Anna Leonowens.

    The novel is set in the small kingdom of Siam (now Thailand). Siam is a country where a few foreigners— mostly traders and missionaries—have settled, but the country is still largely unknown to the West.
