Guzmán's childhood was quite unstable, as he was sent to live with his grandmother at the age of four. His mother was addicted to alcohol and other drugs, and his father left for the United States to pursue a career as a drug trafficker. After her death, his mother's sister suggested that he be sent to live with a cousin in Mexico City, where his uncle would find him a job in a hotel. He lived a mediocre childhood in a working-class neighborhood. His grandmother was a strict disciplinarian who trained him in the strict Catholic faith of the Mexican people.

Guzmán entered a local military school at the age of thirteen. In school, he became a good student and decided to study accounting in order to become a bookkeeper. In 1970 he began working for a drug trafficking organization called the "Calderón Leyva" family, but in 1975 he broke with them and went into hiding from them. He then began to expand his operations with a new organization called the "Los Aztecas", which was a cartel with ties to the Gulf Cartel.

Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera is a Mexican drug lord who headed the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization named after the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa where it was formed. Known as "El Chapo Guzmán" for his stature, he became Mexico's top drug kingpin in 2003 after the arrest of his rival Osiel Cárdenas of the Gulf Cartel, and is considered the "most powerful drug trafficker in the world" by the United States Department of the Treasury.
