Walt Stone personality type is ENFJ, something that I was not aware of until I began researching this book.
In the middle of the book, Walt Stone is diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor. In a desperate attempt to improve his chances, he decided to try a regimen of chemo and radiation. As a result, he becomes a quadriplegic, unable to walk or talk.
His physical condition improves, but his emotional condition deteriorates. He is an emotional cripple. For the first time in a long time, he is alone.
As a quadriplegic, he can no longer draw. His artwork has been an important part of his identity for as long as he can remember. It was his escape from his family and his childhood. Now that escape is gone.
He is depressed. He spends all his time alone in bed, feeling sorry for himself and sad. He can’t draw. His artwork has become a part of him and he can’t give it up.
And then he decides to draw again.
He begins drawing Walt and Walt does what Walt does best: he draws his feelings out and expresses himself using Walt as an avatar for his emotions.
