    As a young boy he was even more interested in sports than his sisters and often preferred to play basketball rather than go to school.

    At the age of 8 his mother enrolled him in judo. He took to the sport like a duck to water.

    He took to judo very quickly, and by the age of 12 he was already competing at a national level, and had already won the titles of national champion and junior champion.

    When he was in his early teens he moved from Miyagi prefecture to Tokyo where he trained at the Kodokan.

    During this time his interest in sports was developing and so he began to include sports into his judo training.

    At the end of his first year at the Kodokan he was invited to represent his country at the first National Judo Championship.

    He had an excellent tournament and won both the junior and open class title.

    He continued to win junior titles, and soon became a senior representative, and in 1965 he competed at the Tokyo Olympics where he won a bronze medal.
