We are introduced to the cast in Chapter 1, where we learn that Haru is an extremely hot swimmer, Makoto is a popular swimmer who's very shy, Rin is a quiet, reserved girl who wants to be a swimmer but is small for her age, Nagisa is an aspiring swimmer who's in love with Haru, Rei is a confident swimmer who's also in love with Haru, and Maki is an aspiring swimmer who's very insecure about herself.
The story is set in the future, after an unknown time traveling event has occurred which altered the world in some way. Despite being the most popular sport in Japan, swimming is now illegal. The reason for this is that swimming has been found to have health risks, including cancer and other diseases. This has caused many people to go into isolation, including the members of the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club.
