Alfred Jodl was born on 14th March 1887 in Berlin, Germany. He studied law at the University of Freiburg and passed his first examination, which was equivalent to an undergraduate degree, in 1909. He was awarded his doctorate in 1912. He subsequently joined the German Foreign Office and was appointed legal advisor to the German General Staff. He went on to become the Chief of the Military-Legal Division of the Foreign Office, but his career prospects were limited because of his Jewish origin. This, together with the outbreak of WWI, led to him resigning his position in 1917.
Alfred Jodl then went on to work at the German Red Cross and the German War Ministry. He then returned to the Foreign Office and worked as a legal advisor to the German High Command. In 1936, he was appointed Chief of the Central Office for the Coordination of Legal Matters for the Armed Forces and later became Chief of the International Law Section. He was awarded a doctorate for this work in 1939.
