Cecil Adams was born in 1938 in New York City. He attended school until the sixth grade. He was then home-schooled by his father, a pharmacist. He first became interested in photography at age 9, when his father bought him a Kodak Brownie camera and flash attachment for Christmas.
Adams received a B.A. in photography from the University of Arizona in 1962, where he studied under painter, photographer, and teacher John Gierach. He later received an M.A. in Communications from Arizona State University in 1967. His university studies included a study of photography and video in the late 1960s, when he became interested in electronic image processing techniques.
