Barbara Maitland was a member of the Royal Society of Canada, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences. She was a recipient of many honorary degrees from universities in Canada and abroad. She served as President of the National Research Council from 1942 to 1945. She was a recipient of the Order of Canada in 1943, and was made a member of the Order of Manitoba in 1946. In 1971, she was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, and in 1973 she was made a member of the Order of Manitoba. The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women presented her with its highest honour, The W.H. McConnell Award, in 1975.
Maitland was born on September 14, 1891 in the family home at 606 Carlton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is not far from the University of Manitoba, where Barbara would later work after graduation. Her father was Dr. William Maitland (1860–1938), who had graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1880 and who worked at the Winnipeg General Hospital.
