Moriarty is depicted as a young, British, bespectacled (though Gaiman later retconned this) man with blond hair and dressed in a paisley shirt and double-breasted suit. He was originally drawn with a scar on his chin, but this was eventually changed to a mole due to complaints from gay readers. Moriarty's attire is frequently described as being "old-fashioned" or "Victorian." In later stories he dons a variety of hats, including fedora, top hat, bowler, and even a baseball cap.
