When he was in middle school he had a classmate whose nickname was “Lonely.” Aru had his problems, too, being the only Japanese kid in a mostly American school, but he never thought about himself as lonely. He’d always been surrounded by friends and family.
Until he went to high school.
“In the first year at high school, I just didn’t have many friends,” he says. “I felt like I had nobody to hang out with.”
When Aru started considering suicide, he says, it was because he felt like he had nobody to turn to.
In his first year of high school, Aru worked as a waiter at a restaurant in the mall next to his high school. One day, a couple of students came in and asked him if he knew where they could buy beer. “I told them I’d tell them where to buy it, but I didn’t know where it was.
