Walsh was born in Baltimore, Maryland. The son of an Irish Catholic mother and an Irish Catholic father, Walsh’s father was a police officer and a member of the Maryland State Police and was killed in the line of duty when Walsh was 12 years old. Walsh’s mother then married his stepfather, a federal law enforcement official, and Walsh went to live with his stepfather and his wife.
Walsh graduated from the Baltimore City College High School in 1968. He then attended the University of Maryland, College Park and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1972. He attended graduate school at the University of Maryland and received a Master of Science degree in mathematics education. Walsh also holds two certificates from the FBI National Academy: the National Academy Associates (NAA) and the National Academy Course in Senior Management.
Walsh began his career as a Baltimore City school teacher in 1973, working in elementary schools in the city, where he taught mathematics, computer technology, science and social studies.
In 1983, Walsh was hired by the Baltimore City Public Schools System to be head of mathematics education in the district's Special Education Department.
Gary Walsh is an English football coach and former footballer who is currently Head goalkeeping coach at West Bromwich Albion. As a player, he was a goalkeeper from 1985 to 2006, notably playing Premier League football with Manchester United, Oldham Athletic, Middlesbrough, Bradford City and Wigan Athletic. He also played in Scotland for Airdrieonians, He became goalkeeping coach at Wigan under manager Paul Jewell before teaming back up with Jewell at Derby County.
