I think that the main reason that people like Sonic, is because he is a fun character, and his goal is to save everyone, even when everyone else has given up. Another reason why people like Sonic is because he is good with using his spin attacks, and his speed.
Although, I do not know if the reason why people like Sonic is because he is really fast. I think that is what attracts people to him in the first place, but it has to be an attraction in the senses of "speed" not in the "fast" sense.
