Alexander Graham Bell was an inventor known for his contributions to the field of telecommunications. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and moved to Canada at a young age. Bell graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1876, then traveled to the United States. There he worked as an assistant to Thomas Watson and later to Elisha Gray at their telephone company in New Haven, Connecticut. He went on to establish his own company in New York in 1877. In 1881 he met Thomas Watson, who became an investor and partner with Bell. The two worked together on the development of the telephone, which they patented in 1876. Later they founded a new company, the Bell Telephone Company, which later became AT&T. This company eventually became the largest telephone company in the world.
