Clayton's father was a farmer who died in 1879 when Clayton was three years old. At the time of his death, her mother had married William Grainger. Clayton's stepfather was a man who was unfaithful to the mother. Grainger eventually left the family, taking their savings with him. His departure left them nearly penniless. While Clayton was still young, the family moved to New South Wales to start over, but moved back to England in 1883 when Clayton was ten years old.
