Gloria then moved from the legislative building to the state legislative advisory board. In 1975, Gloria became the executive assistant to Alabama Governor George C. Wallace, who was popularly known as "Dukakis." In 1977, Gloria became the first female to be appointed to the Alabama State Board of Education.
Gloria Matthews served as the superintendent of the Alabama State Board of Education until her retirement in 1999.
